Sleep

The first two weeks after she was born were the toughest. As much as everyone tells you nothing can really prepare you for that severe sleep deprivation that comes with a newborn child. Nothing can prepare you for that cry slash scream for food that burst out of vocal chords that are just days old. Let it be known broken sleeps are an absolute KILLER! The 2 hours here and 1 hour there are not what sleep was made for… at all!
That being said for those first couple of weeks and months nothing filled me with more joy, pride and ecstasy then watching on as my two ladies lay fast asleep tucked up tight or when Maya laid her head down on my chest, closed her eyes and drifted into dreamland.
She moves a lot in her sleep. I wonder how can there be things making her laugh, jump, smile and “wave her hand in the air like she just don’t care” at such an early age. Where do those thoughts and dreams come from with so little experience, imagination and aspirations? Does the family now possess a new dreamer? Just another wonder of the world I guess.
We have been blessed though, once some routines were established Maya began to sleep through the night after just a couple of weeks! A moment of peace and a small reminder of a previous life that will never be again. I’m sure teething will come along and kick my own sleeping habits to the curb but for now I will enjoy those precious 4 hour sleeps she is letting me have.
